R38

The R38 controller is our entry level PID temperature controller designed for simple heating/cooling applications between -50C and +850C. This unit has a simplified menu structure and can be used in PID or ON/OFF mode. Thermocouple, PT100 and thermistor inputs only and a maximum of two outputs.

PID and ON/OFF Control – The R38 PID controller can regulate temperatures between -50C and +850C, and so can be used for either heating or cooling. The exact range depends on sensor type, which can be NTC, KTY, PT100 or PT1000. PID control uses autotuning, the behaviour of which can be adjusted through a number of parameters.

The unit can also be set to act as an ON/OFF controller, with a choice of single action or double action depending on the type of process and heating/cooling device(s) involved.

Compressor Protection – The R38 PID temperature controller has optional compressor protection functionality which can be utilised if one of the outputs is set as a cooling output. This facility is available for either PID or ON/OFF control.

Temperature Alarms – An alarm can be triggered by a number of events including Hi and Lo thresholds, if Output 2 is configured to do so. In this case, one of the status lights, representing Output 2, becomes the Alarm status light. There is no internal buzzer.

3 Digit LED – The R38 has 3 LED digits, in red, each digit 12mm high. There is also a decimal point, and 4 status lights.

Keyboard – There are 4 operator keys: U, P, UP and DOWN, arranged to the right of the LED display. The R38 has mechanical keys; the R38S has touch sensitive keys. There is a keyboard lock function for use in public areas or to prevent unintentional/unauthorised key operation.

Display options – The R38 can be set to display temperature as either Centigrade or Fahrenheit, and to the nearest 1.0 or 0.1 degrees.

IP65 – When panel mounted indoors, enclosed at the rear and with gasket fitted, this unit is rated IP65.

Inputs and Outputs – The R38 has 2 inputs and 2 relay outputs. One input is connected to the selected temperature sensor and the second is a digital input which can be used as a control signal. One output is used to control the compressor or heating device as appropriate to the application, and the other is assigned to Alarm.

Programming – Parameters can be set via the front panel keys or uploaded via an A01 programming key which has previously had settings stored on it, from another unit or from a PC. (Key ordered separately.)

Communications – There is a Modbus port to enable communication with other devices as part of a wider system, or for datalogging.
